JOHANN PHILIPP von SHÖNBORN (1605-1673), WAS THE FIRST IN A LONG LINE OF BISHOPS TO COME FROM THE SHÖNBORN FAMILY. HE BECAME BISHOP OF WÜRZBURG IN 1643, AND IN 1647 BECAME ARCHBISHOP AND ELECTOR OF MAINZ. IN HIS CAPACITY AS ACHBISHOP AND ELECTOR, HE WAS ALSO ARCHCHANCELLOR OF THE EMPIRE, THE SECOND MOST POWERFUL POSITION AFTER THE EMPEROR. THE THIRTY YEARS' WAR (1618-1648) HAD BEEN ONE OF THE LONGEST AND MOST DESTRUCTIVE CONFLICTS WESTERN EUROPE HAD EVER SUFFERED, AND IN POST THIRTY YEARS' WAR GERMANY, JOHANN PHILIPP IS NOTED FOR USING HIS POLITICAL POWER WITH AN AIM TO ENSURE AND KEEP THE PEACE.
