THE 1715 TREASURE FLEET, ALSO CALLED THE 1715 PLATE FLEET, SET SAIL FROM THE NEW WORLD TO SPAIN WITH 11 SHIPS LADEN WITH SILVER AND GOLD. SEVEN DAYS OUT FROM HAVANA, ON JULY 31, 1715, THE ILL-FATED FLEET WAS STRUCK BY A POWERFUL HURRICANE WHICH SWEPT THROUGH THE BAHAMA CHANNEL, AND ALL ELEVEN SHIPS WERE LOST OFF THE EAST COAST OF FLORIDA. FEW OF THE CREW SURVIVED AND OVER 700 SOULS WERE SENT TO THE BOTTOM OF DAVY JONES' LOCKER. DURING THE INITIAL CONTEMPORARY SALVAGE EFFORTS, MANY SHIPS TOOK PART, INCLUDING THOSE BELONGING TO KNOWN PIRATES AND PRIVATEERS, SOME ENDING UP PREYING UPON EACH OTHER FOR THEIR CARGO OF SALVAGED COINS.
