THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF CENTRAL AMERICA WAS FIRST FORMED AS THE UNITED PROVINCES OF CENTRAL AMERICA IN 1821, WHEN THE FORMER TERRITORITES OF THE SPANISH PROVINCES OF THE CAPTAINCY GENERAL OF GUATEMALA (VICEROYALTY OF NEW SPAIN) BANDED TOGETHER TO FORM A SINGLE REPUBLICAN DEMOCRACY.

GUATEMALA, HONDURAS, EL SALVADOR, NICARAGUA AND COSTA RICA WERE PART OF THIS UNION, ALTHOUGH THE TERRITORIES WERE ALSO ANNEXED BY THE EMPIRE OF MEXICO IN 1821.

FOLLOWING MEXICAN INTERFERENCE, INTERNAL POLITICAL STRIFE, INTERMITTENT UPRISINGS AND CIVIL WAR, BY 1838 THE UNION WAS EFFECTIVELY DISSOLVED, ENDING THE DREAM OF A UNITED CENTRAL AMERICA.
