CHARLES XIV JOHN (1763-1844), WAS BORN IN FRANCE AS JEAN BERNADOTTE. HE HAD A LONG CAREER IN THE FRENCH ARMY, CULMINATING WITH BEING APPOINTED A MARSHAL OF FRANCE BY THE EMPEROR NAPOLEON I. IN 1810 HE WAS ELECTED HEIR PRESUMPTIVE TO CHARLES XIII, THE OLD AND CHILDLESS KING OF SWEDEN. HE WAS ADOPTED BY KING CHARLES XIII, AND BECAME HEAD OF BOTH ARMY AND GOVERNMENT. HE ALLIED AGAINST HIS FORMER COMMANDER AND FRIEND NAPOLEON IN THE WAR OF THE SIXTH COALITION. HE SECURED A PERSONAL UNION OF SWEDEN WITH NORWAY AFTER THE SWEDISH-NORWEGIAN WAR OF 1814, AND SUCCEDED TO THE CROWNS OF BOTH KINGDOMS. HE WAS VERY POPULAR IN BOTH COUNTRIES AND ESTABLISHED THE BERNADOTTE DYNASTY.
