A SILVER HALF DOLLAR AND GOLD DOLLAR WERE ISSUED TO COMMEMORATE THE 100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF ULYSSES S. GRANT (1822-1885), THE 18th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES AND COMMANDING GENERAL OF THE UNION ARMY DURING THE SECOND HALF OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR.
THERE ARE TWO VARIETIES OF THE GOLD ONE-DOLLAR, THE FIRST WITH SMALL INCUSE STAR ON THE OBVERSE OVER THE "T" IN GRANT, AND THIS VARIETY WITHOUT THE STAR. BOTH VARIETIES HAD AN EXTREMELY LOW SIMILAR MINTAGE (5016*/5000), THE ONES WITH NO STAR COMMANDING A SLIGHTLY HIGHER PREMIUM.
