GENERAL PAUL VON BENECKEDORFF AND VON HINDENBURG CAME OUT OF RETIREMENT AT THE OUTBREAK OF WWI AND BECAME CHIEF OF THE GENERAL STAFF BY 1916. DURING THE WAR, HE WAS VICTOR OF THE BATTLE OF TANNENBURG, WHICH ACCORDED HIM THE STATUS OF A NATIONAL HERO, AND HE ROSE TO THE RANK OF FIELD MARSHAL. HE ENJOYED WIDE POPULARITY SINCE MANY PEOPLE BLAMED POLITICIANS AND NOT THE ARMY FOR THE WAR'S OUTCOME. HE WAS ELECTED SECOND PRESIDENT OF GERMANY IN 1925 AND RE-ELECTED IN 1932 (WHEN HE RAN AGAINST ADOLPH HITLER).
HE DIED IN 1934, LEAVING BEHIND A POLITICAL VACUUM THAT WOULD MAKE HITLER ALL-POWERFUL.
