KING ALEXANDER I (1888-1934), WAS BORN IN THE PRINCIPALITY OF MONTENEGRO INTO THE SERBIAN ROYAL FAMILY WHICH WAS IN EXILE FORCED BY A RIVAL ROYAL HOUSE. HE WAS ATTENDING SCHOOL IN ST. PETERSBURG RUSSIA IN 1903, WHEN HIS FATHER WHO BECAME PETER I OF SERBIA, IN A BLOODY COUP, RETOOK THE THRONE OF SERBIA. IN 1909, ALEXANDER'S BROTHER RENOUNCED HIS CLAIM TO THE THRONE, LEAVING ALEXANDER THE PRINCIPAL HEIR. IN 1922, HE MARRIED PRINCESS MARIA OF ROMANIA. ALEXANDER FOUGHT HEROICALLY IN THE BALKAN WARS AND IN WWI SERVED AS SUPREME COMMANDER OF SERBIA'S FORCES. ON HIS FATHER'S DEATH IN 1921, ALEXANDER INHERITED THE KINGDOM OF SERBS, CROATS AND SLOVENES WHICH BECAME YUGOSLAVIA. IN 1929, IN RESPONSE TO POLITICAL CRISIS, HE ABOLISHED THE CONSTITUTION, PROROGUED PARLIAMENT AND INSITUTED A PERSONAL DICTATORSHIP. HE ISTITUTED A NEW CONSTITUTION THE YEAR THAT THIS COIN WAS ISSUED. ON THE 9th OF OCTOBER, 1934, KING ALEXANDER WAS ASSASSINATED BY A GUNMEN WHILE BEING DRIVEN THROUGH THE STREET OF MARSAILLES IN HIS MOTORCAR WHILE ON A ROYAL STATE VISIT TO FRANCE.
