THE AMERICAN CONVENTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS, ALSO KNOWN AS THE PACT OF SAN JOSÉ, IS AN INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS INSTRUMENT SIGNED BY THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES IN DECEMBER, 1969, AND CAME INTO FORCE IN 1978. IT WAS ADOPTED AT THE INTER-AMERICAN SPECIALIZED CONFERENCE ON HUMAN RIGHTS IN SAN JOSÉ, COSTA RICA.
IT'S PURPOSE IS "TO CONSOLIDATE IN THIS HEMISPHERE, WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTIONS, A SYSTEM OF LIBERTY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE BASED ON RESPECT FOR THE ESSENTIAL RIGHTS OF MAN."
