THE PRINCESS ELIZABETH FIRST MET HER SECOND COUSIN ONCE REMOVED, PRINCE PHILIP OF GREECE AND DENMARK, IN 1934. THEY MET AGAIN IN 1937, AFTER THE ABDICATION OF HER UNCLE, EDWARD VIII, WHEN HER FATHER HAD BECOME KING, AND SHE HEIR PRESUMTIVE TO THE THRONE. AT THE ROYAL NAVAL COLLEGE, WHEN ELIZABETH WAS 13, SHE MET PHILIP AGAIN AND SAID THAT IT WAS THEN SHE FELL IN LOVE WITH HIM. THEY EXCHANGED LETTERS AND STARTED A LENGTHY COURTSHIP. FOREIGN BORN PHILIP, A PRINCE "WITHOUT A HOME OR A KINGDOM" AND WITH LITTLE FINANCIAL STANDING, WAS THOUGHT BY SOME OF THE ADVISORS OF ELIZABETH'S FATHER, KING GEORGE VI, TO BE A POOR MATCH TO A GIRL THAT WOULD SOMEDAY REIGN AS QUEEN. HER MOTHER, ELIZABETH THE QUEEN CONSORT, WAS ALSO DISAPPROVING, DUBBING PHILIP "THE HUN", BUT LATER CHANGED HER MIND AND SAID HE WAS "AN ENGLISH GENTLEMAN". PHILIP RENOUNCED HIS FOREIGN TITLES, CHANGED HIS NAME TO HIS MOTHER'S FAMILY'S BRITISH NAME OF MOUNTBATTEN, CONVERTED TO THE ANGLICAN FAITH, AND SERVED IN THE BRITISH NAVY DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR. IN 1947, THE COUPLE ANNOUNCED THEIR ENGAGEMENT, AND PRIOR TO THE WEDDING PHILIP WAS GRANTED THE TITLE DUKE OF EDINBURGH. THE ROYAL COUPLE WERE WED ON NOVEMBER 20, 1947 AT WESTMINSTER ABBEY. PRINCE CHARLES WAS BORN TO THE COUPLE A YEAR LATER (PRINCESS ANNE WAS BORN IN 1950, PRINCE ANDREW IN 1960, AND PRINCE EDWARD IN 1964). ELIZABETH AND PHILIP WERE ON A WORLD GOODWILL TOUR ON BEHALF OF HER AILING FATHER, AND WHILE IN KENYA THEY RECEIVED THE NEWS OF THE KING'S DEATH. FROM THAT MOMENT ON ELIZABETH II WOULD BE QUEEN, AND HER HUSBAND PHILIP HER PRINCE CONSORT.
