JÓSE ANTONIO PÁEZ HERRERA (1790-1873) WAS THE THIRD, NINTH AND NINETEENTH PRESIDENT OF VENEZUELA AND WAS GENERAL IN CHIEF OF THE ARMY DURING VENEZUELA'S FIGHT FOR INDEPENDENCE AGAINST SPAIN.
HE IS CONSIDERED BY MANY TO BE A SUPREME EXAMPLE OF A CAUDILLO, OR POLITICAL AND MILITARY LEADER OF 19TH CENTURY SOUTH AMERICA.
AS VENEZUELA'S GREATEST LIVING ICON, HE WOULD RETURN TO POWER WHEN THE NATIONAL GOVERNMENT FAILED AND HIS RULE IS ACCOUNTED AS HAVING BEEN A GOLDEN AGE FOR VENEZUELA.
HE LED A REVOLT AGAINST THE DICTATOR PRESIDENT MONAGAS IN 1847 BUT WAS DEFEATED IN BATTLE AND EXILED IN 1850.
HE RETURNED FROM EXILED AND HIMSELF BECAME SUPREME DICTATOR IN 1861, BUT AGAIN WAS EXILED IN 1863.
HE SPENT HIS REMAINING TEN YEARS LIVING IN NEW YORK CITY.
