THROUGH THE INITIATION BY THE NATIONAL CYCLIST’S UNION IN GREAT BRITAIN, THE INTERNATIONAL CYCLING ASSOCIATION WAS FORMED IN 1892. THE FIRST RECOGNIZED WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WAS HELD IN CHICAGO IN 1893. THE UCI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE NOW PROMOTED BY THE UNION CYCLIST INTERNATIONALE, WHICH REPLACED THE ICA, TO DETERMINE WORLD CHAMPION CYCLISTS, AND ARE HELD IN A DIFFERENT COUNTRY EVERY YEAR WITH EVENTS IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT STYLES OF RACING. THEY ARE HELD FOR MEN AND WOMEN COMPETITORS ON THE ROAD, IN A VELODROME, INDOORS, CROSS-COUNTRY AND DOWNHILL, AS WELL AS EVENTS FOR THE DISABLED. BEGINNING IN 1895, PROFESSIONALS, AS OPPOSED TO AMATEUR COMPETITORS, HAVE PARTICIPATED IN THE CHAMPIONSHIPS.

THE 1993 UCI TRACK CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS WERE HELD IN VIKINGSKIPIT SPEED SKATING RINK IN HAMAR, NORWAY. EIGHT EVENTS FOR MEN AND THREE FOR WOMEN WERE HELD, AND FIVE WORLD RECORDS WERE SET DURING THE COMPETITIONS. A TEMPORARY VELODROME WAS BUILT, NIXING THE PLAN TO BUILD A PERMANENT ONE IN OSLO.
