THE CENTRAL BANK OF NICARAGUA WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1960, AND BEGAN OPERATING ON JANUARY 1, 1961. PICTURED ON THE MEDAL'S REVERSE IS THE SPANISH CONQUISTADOR FRANCISCO HERNANDEZ DE CORDOBA, CONSIDERED TO BE THE FOUNDER OF NICARAGUA. HE FOUNDED THE NICARAGUAN CITIES OF GRANADA AND LEON, AND THE CURRENCY OF NICARAGUA IS NAMED IN HIS HONOR. BOTH CORTEZ AND PNCE DE LEON SUPPORTED CORDOBA IN HIS CONQUEST OF NICARAGUA IN 1524, BUT HE WAS CONSIDERED AN INSURRECTIONIST BY THE COLONIAL ADMINISTRATOR, PEDRO ARIAS DAVILA, AND WAS EXECUTED BY BEHEADING IN 1526.
