THEE FRANCH FRANC WAS INTRODUCED IN 1360, TO PAY THE RANSOM OF KING JOHN II OF FRANCE TO THE ENGLISH. IT WAS REPLACED BY THE ECU IN 1641, AND ESTABLISHED AS THE NATIONAL CURRENCY OF FRANCE AFTER THE FRENCH REVOLUTION.
THE FRANC WAS FIXED TO THE EURO (€) IN 1999. DURING THE TRANSITION PERIOD, FRANCS COULD BE EXCHANGED ONLY AT THE BANK OF FRANCE UP TO 2005, BUT THE LAST FRANC WAS COINED IN 2001.
