ENGLISH BORN SIR HENRY PARKES, GCMG (1815-1896) WAS THE EARLIEST ADVOCATE IN THE AUSTRALIAN COLONIES FOR A FEDERAL COUNCIL, THE COUNCIL WHICH LED TO THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA. SIR HENRY IS KNOWN AS "THE FATHER OF AUSTRALIAN FEDERATION". THE FEDERATION FOUNDED IN 1901, AND CELEBRATED BY THIS REMARKABLE COIN BY HONORING THIS "FOUNDING FATHER" OF AUSTRALIA AND STRUCK FOR THE CENTENNIAL OF THE FEDERATION.
UPON THE FOUNDING OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA IN 1901, THE DUKE OF CORNWALL AND YORK, THE FUTURE KING GEORGE V (1865-1936; REIGNED 1910-1936), OPENED THE FIRST SESSION OF THE AUSTRALIAN PARLIAMENT AT THE ROYAL EXHIBITION BUILDING IN MELBOURNE DURING HIS TOUR OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE.
