THE WESTERN OR LOWLAND BONGO FACES AN ONGOING POPULATION DECLINE AND IS CONSIDERED NEAR THREATENED ON THE CONSERVATION STATUS SCALE. THE EASTERN OR MOUNTAIN BONGO OF KENYA IS CRITICALLY ENDANGERED, WITH MORE SPECIMENS IN CAPTIVITY THAN IN NATURE.
