FRANCISCO DE MIRANDA "THE FIRST UNIVERSAL VENEZUELAN" (1715-1816) WAS A VENEZUELAN REVOLUTIONARY MILITARY AND POLITICAL LEADER AGAINST SPANISH COLONIAL DOMINATION WHO LIBERATED A LARGE PART OF SOUTH AMERICA AND IS SEEN AS A PRECURSOR TO SIMÓN BOLÍVAR. MIRANDA WAS AN IDEALIST AND SERVED IN THE SPANISH ARMY FIGHTING THE BRITISH DURING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION, PARTICIPATED IN THE FRENCH REVOLUTION, AND WAS AN ICON OF THE SPANISH AMERICAN WARS OF INDEPENDENCE. HE LANDED IN HIS FIRST ATTEMPT TO LIBERATE VENEZUELA AT THE PORT OF LA VELA DE CORO (WHICH IS REFERRED TO IN THE LEGEND ON THE OBVERSE OF THIS COIN) IN 1806, CAPTURING THE FORT THERE. BY 1810, THE FIRST REPUBLIC OF VENEZUELA WAS FORMED.
