THE NATIONAL EMBLEM OF OMAN IS AN INSIGNIA CONSISTING OF A KHANJAR TRADITIONAL AND CEREMONIAL DAGGER IN ITS SHEATH (WITH BELT) THAT IS SUPERIMPOSED UPON TWO CROSSED SWORDS. ADOPTED IN THE 18TH CENTURY AS THE BADGE OF THE OMANI ROYAL FAMILY, IT SUBSEQUENTLY BECAME THE NATIONAL EMBLEM OF THE SULTANATE OF OMAN.
THE KHANJAR (ALSO JANBIYA OR JAMBIYA) IS WORN BY MEN FOR CEREMONIAL OCCASIONS, AND IS NOTED IN OMAN BY ITS SHORT CURVED BLADE RESEMBLING A LETTER “J”. IT REMAINS A SYMBOL OF A MAN’S ORIGINS, MANHOOD AND COURAGE.
IN 1820 THE MARITIME EMPIRE OF THE SULTANATE OF MUSCAT UNIFIED WITH THE IMAMATE OF OMAN TO FORM THE SULTANATE OF MUSCAT AND OMAN.
THE YEAR THIS COIN WAS ISSUED, THE BRITISH CONSOLIDATED POWER IN THE REGION AFTER A PERIOD OF RELIGIOUS TURMOIL, COMMUNIST INSURGENCY, REBELLION, AND DYNASTIC UNCERTAINTY. THE THEN SULTAN, SAID BIN TAIMUR, HAD BECOME ERRATIC AND PARANOID. HE EVEN PLACED HIS OWN SON, QABOOS BIN SAID, UNDER HOUSE ARREST AND PASSED BIZARRE AUTOCRATIC AND RANDOM LAWS. BRITISH FORCES HELPED QABOOS ENACT A PALACE COUP, OUSTING THE MAD SULTAN, AND INSTALLING HIS SON AS SULTAN OF MUSCAT AND OMAN. LATER THE SAME YEAR, THE TERRITORIES WERE REORGANIZED INTO THE SULTANATE OF OMAN, STILL RULED BY SULTAN QABOOS BIN SAID. SAID BIN TAIMUR WAS SENT INTO EXILE IN THE UK.
