RUSSIAN POLAND HAD BEEN PARTITIONED AND GIVEN TO RUSSIA BY THE ALLIES AFTER THE NAPOLEONIC WARS. THE KINGDOM OR CONGRESS OF POLAND WAS CREATED BY THE CONGRESS OF VIENNA IN 1815, AND WAS IN PERSONAL UNION WITH THE TSAR AND A PART OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE. IT OFFICIALLY BECAME PART OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE IN 1867, BUT NOT WITHOUT LARGE SCALE MILITARY UPRISINGS IN 1830 AND 1863.
THE KINGDOM HAD A LIBERAL CONSTITUTION AND CONSIDERABLE POLITICAL AUTONOMY, BUT AFTER THE UPRISINGS, WAS RULED BY VICEROYS OF THE TSAR AND DIVIDED INTO PROVINCES.
NICHOLAS I (1796-1855), WAS BORN THE THIRD SON OF TSAR PAUL I. HIS OLDEST BROTHER, TSAR ALEXANDER I, DIED OF TYPHUS IN 1825, AND UPON THE REFUSAL OF HIS NEXT OLDEST BROTHER, CONSTANTINE, TO TAKE THE THRONE, NICHOLAS BECAME TSAR OF ALL THE RUSSIAS, KING OF POLAND AND GRAND PRINCE OF FINLAND.
AT THE END OF HIS REACTIONARY AND AUTOCRATIC RULE, 7.7 MILLION SQUARE MILES WERE WITHIN THE BORDERS OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE.
