AFTER THE FIRST WORLD WAR, NUMISMATISTS BEGAN URGING THE U.S. MINT TO DESIGN A COIN EMBLEMATIC OF PEACE. LEADING NUMISMATIST FARRAN ZERBE (1871-1949), FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE AMERICAN NUMISMATIC SOCIETY, PROPOSED THE MINTING OF A COIN COMMEMORATING PEACE IN A PAPER READ AT THE ANA CONVENTION IN CHICAGO IN 1920. THE PROPOSAL LED TO THE FORMATION OF A COMMITEE TO CONGRESS, AND ALSO CALLED FOR A POPULAR DESIGN COMPETITION. THIS COIN RESULTED FROM THE DESIGN COMPETITION. THIS COMPLETED THE REDESIGN OF AMERICAN COINAGE BEGUN IN 1907, AND WAS APPROVED BY SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY ANDREW MELLON (1835-1937) IN 1921.

THE SCULPTOR/DESIGNER OF THE COIN, ITALIAN IMMIGRANT ANTHONY DE FRANCISCI (1887-1964), USED HIS WIFE THERESA'S FEATURES AS A MODEL FOR LIBERTY. THE PEACE DOLLAR WAS MINTED FROM 1921 TO 1928, AND AGAIN IN 1934 AND 1935.
