THE VENERABLE POPE PAUL VI (REIGNED 1963-1978), BECAME THE FIRST PONTIFF TO SET FOOT ON AFRICAN SOIL. HE WAS ONE OF THE MOST TRAVELLED POPES IN HISTORY, EARNING HIM THE NICKNAME "THE PILGRIM POPE". WHILE ON HIS MISSION TO UGANDA, HE MADE PILGRIMAGE TO THE SANCTUARY OF THE MARTYRS OF UGANDA (THE UGANDA MARTYRS' NATIONAL SHRINE AT NAMUGONGO).
