LAUNCHED APRILL 11, 1970, APOLLO XIII WAS THE SEVENTH MANNED SPACEFLIGHT IOF THE APOLLO SPACE PROGRAM AND WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE THIRD TO LAND ON THE MOON. DUE TO AN OXYGEN TANK EXPLOSION TWO DAYS INTO THE MISSION, THE LUNAR LANDING WAS ABORTED. AFTER JURY-RIGGING THE CARBON DIOXIDE REMOVAL SYSTEM, SUFFERING LOSS OF CABIN HEAT DUE TO LIMITED POWER AND LACK OF DRINKABLE WATER, THE CRAFT AND CREW RETURNED SAFELY TO EARTH ON APRIL 17th.
THE MISSION WAS COMMANDED BY JAMES A. LOVELL, WITH JOHN L. "JACK" SWIGGERT PILOTING THE COMMAND MODULE AND FRED W. HAISE THE LUNAR MODULE.
