CARL XV (b. 1826, d. 1872), WAS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR OF SCANDINAVIAN KINGS AND A TRUE CONSTITUTIONAL RULER. HIS REIGN WAS MARKED FOR WIDE-REACHING AND UNIVERSAL REFORM OF THE INSTITUTIONS OF GOVERNMENT AND LAW, AND HE WAS AN ADVOCATE OF THE SOLIDARITY OF THE THREE NORTHERN KINGDOMS OF NORWAY, SWEDEN (UNITED UNDER THE SAME CROWN) AND THE NEIGHBORING KINGDOM OF DENMARK. HE ALSO RECEIVED RECOGNITION AS A PAINTER AND A POET. AFTER HIS DEATH, HIS BROTHER SUCCEEDED TO THE THRONES OF SWEDEN AND NORWAY AS OSCAR II.
