THE FALKLANDS FUR SEAL (ARCTOCEPHALUS AUSTRALIS AUSTRALIS) IS A SUBSPECIES OF THE SOUTH AMERICAN FUR SEAL. FALKLANDS FUR SEALS HAVE 16 BREEDING SITES, ONE BEING ON THE FALKLANDS AND THE OTHERS NORTHWEST ON THE ROCKY OFFSHORE ISLANDS. THE AVERAGE LENGTH OF A MALE ADULT IS 1.9 METERS, WHILE A FEMALE RANGES AROUND 1.3 METERS. THESE ANIMALS FEED MOSTLY ON LOBSTER KRILL, SPENDING MOST OF THEIR TIME AT SEA, AND DIVE TO DEPTHS OF 30 TO 40 METERS. DURING THE 19th CENTURY THEY WERE HUNTED ALMOST TO EXTINCTION, BUT TODAY THEY HAVE A MODEST POPULATION OF 8,000 BREEDING FEMALES AROUND THE FALKLANDS.
