INDONESIA DECLARED INDEPENDENCE FROM DUTCH RULE IN 1945. DUTCH COLONIAL GOVERNMENT ENDED WITH THE JAPANESE INVASION AND OCCUPATION DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR. INDEPENDENCE WAS DECLARED BY ONE OF NATIONALIST LEADERS AND INDONESIA'S FIRST PRESIDENT, SUKARNO, TWO DAYS AFTER JAPAN SURRENDERED. THE DUTCH TRIED TO REESTABLISH DOMINANCE, BUT THE CONFLICT ENDED IN 1949 WHEN THE NETHERLANDS WAS FORCED TO RECOGNIZE INDONESIA'S INDEPENDENCE DUE TO INTERNATIONAL PRESSURE.
THE STONE STATUE DEPICTED ON THIS COIN IS SAID TO REPRESENT MANJUSRI, WHICH IS IN BUDDHISM A BODHISATTVA OR ENLIGHTENED BEING, REPRESENTING THE EMBODIMENT OF TRANSCENDENT WISDOM.
