THE FORMER STATE CALLED GRAN COLOMBIA WAS COMPRISED OF TERRITORIES OF PRESENT DAY COLOMBIA, VENEZUELA, ECUADOR, PANAMA, NORTHERN PERU, WESTERN GUAYANA AND NORTHWEST BRAZIL. IT'S FIRST AND ONLY PRESIDENT WAS SIMON BOLIVAR, THE LIBERATOR, WHO PLAYED AN INSTRUMENTAL ROLE IN SEPARATING MUCH OF SOUTH AMERICA FROM SPANISH RULE. THE SHORT LIVED FEDERATION WAS FRACTURED BY INTERNAL POLITICAL DISSENT BETWEEN THOSE THAT SUPPORTED A STRONG CENTRAL GOVERNMENT AND PRESIDENT, AND THOSE THAT WANTED A DECENTRALIZED FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. AS BOLIVAR'S GOVERNMENT COLLAPSED, BOLIVAR RESIGNED HIS PRESIDENCEY IN APRIL OF 1830, INTENDING TO LEAVE FOR EXILE IN EUROPE. HE DIED ON APRIL 27, BEFORE HE SET SAIL FROM CARTEGENA, SUCCUMBING TO TUBERCULOSIS AT THE AGE OF 47. HE WAS BURIED IN THE CATHEDRAL OF SANTA MARTA, IN THE TOWN WHERE HE DIED, AND HIS REMAINS WERE MOVED 12 YEARS LATER TO THE NATIONAL PANTHEON IN VENEZUELA. GRAN COLUMBIA DID NOT LONG OUTLAST BOLIVAR'S DEATH, BEING DISSOLVED AT THE END OF 1830, AND ABOLISHED IN 1831, AND REPLACED BY NEW SEPARATE REPUBLICS.
