EURAFRIQUE or EURAFRIKA REFERS TO THE IDEA OF A STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN EUROPE AND AFRICA. AS A POLITICAL PROGRAM, IT PLAYED AN EARLY AND CRUCIAL ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY, BUT AFTER THAT IT WAS LARGELY FORGOTTEN.
LÉOPOLD SÉDAR SENGHOR (1906-2001) WAS THE FIRST PRESIDENT OF SENEGAL (1960-1980). HE WAS A POET, CULTURAL THEORIST AND POLITICIAN, REGARDED A ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT AFRICAN INTELLECTUALS OF THE 20TH CENTURY. HE SUPPORTED FEDERALISM FOR NEWLY INDEPENDENT AFRICAN STATES IN A FORM OF "FRENCH COMMONWEALTH" WHERE FRANCE, THE FORMER COLONIAL POWER, WOULD RETAIN CERTAIN INFLUENCE. AS A FRANCOPHILE, HE WAS AN ARDENT SUPPORTER OF EURAFRIQUE.
