KRUGER NATIONAL PARK IS ONE OF THE LARGEST GAME RESERVES IN AFRICA AND COVERS ALMOST 20,000 SQUARE KILOMETERS. THE BOER SOUTH AFRICAN REPUBLIC OR ZAR PROTECTED AREAS IN THE PARK AS EARLY AS 1898, AND KRUGER PARK BECAME THE FIRST OFFICIAL NATIONAL PARK OF SOUTH AFRICA IN 1926. THE PARK IS LINKED TO GONAREZHOU NATIONAL PARK AND LIMPOPO NATIONAL PARK, RESPECTIVELY IN NEIGHBORING ZIMBABWE AND MOZAMBIQUE. ALL THREE PARKS ARE A PART OF THE GREAT LIMPOPO TRANSFRONTIER PARK.
THE SPRINGBOK (ANTIDORCAS MARSUPIALIS), IS A MEDIUM SIZED SOUTH TO SOUTHWESTERN AFRICAN ANTELOPE. THEY AVERAGE IN HEIGHT FROM 70 TO 90 CENTIMETERS, AND ARE VERY FAST, REACHING SPEEDS OF 100 KILOMETERS PER HOUR. THEY CAN JUMP UP TO 4 METERS HIGH AND CAN LEAP A DISTANCE OF 15 METERS. A PLETIFUL SPECIES, WITH NUMBERS RANGING UPWARDS OF 2.5 MILLION IN SOUTH AFRICA, MAKING IT THE MOST COMMON ANTELOPE. THE SPRINGBOK WAS THE ANIMAL SYMBOL OF SOUTH AFRICA UNDER APARTHEID AND EARLIER.
