INSTEAD, JUAN CARLOS INTRODUCED REFORMS TO LEAD SPAIN TO DEMOCRACY. THE CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHY WAS ESTABLISHED BY REFERENDUM AND APPROVAL OF THE SPANISH CONSTITUTION IN 1978. IN 1981, JUAN CARLOS WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN DEFEATING A COUP WHICH THREATENED TO RESTORE FRANCO STYLE GOVERNMENT. HE MARRIED PRINCESS SOFIA OF GREECE AND DENMARK IN 1962. JUAN CARLOS I ABDICATED THE THRONE IN FAVOR OF HIS SON IN 2014, WHO BECAME KING FELIPE VI. FELIPE, LIKE HIS FATHER, PROMOTES RELATIONS WITH HISPANIC AMERICA.
