THE ATTEMPT WAS MADE BY BOLIVIAN SURREALIST PAINTER BENJAMIN MENDOZA y AMOR FLORES WHO, DRESSED AS A PRIEST, LUNGED AT THE PONTIFF AS THE LATTER DISEMBARKED FROM THE AIRLINER. MENDOZA WAS ARRESTED AND IMPRISONED.
