SANTIAGO MARIÑO (1788-1854) WAS A REVOLUTIONARY LEADER, GENERAL AND HERO IN THE SPANISH AMERICAN WARS OF INDEPENDENCE FROM SPAIN, WAS A LEADING FIGURE IN THE EVENTFUL YEARS OF THE FIRST AND SECOND REPUBLICS.
HE STAGED A BLOODY COUP D'ÉTAT ENFORCING MILITARY RULE IN 1835, CALLED THE "REVOLUTION OF THE REFORMS", AND FLED INTO EXILE THE FOLLOWING YEAR.
HE RETURNED IN 1848 AND SERVED AS ARMY CHIEF OF THE GENERAL STAFF UNDER PRESIDENT MONAGAS.
