CROWN PRINCESS VICTORIA KA'IULANI WAS PROCLAIMED HEIR APPARENT TO THE THRONE OF THE KINGDOM OF HAWAII IN 1891. SHE WAS SAID TO BE POSSESSED OF GREAT BEAUTY, INTELLIGENCE AND A DETERMINED SPIRIT.
IN 1893 THE HAWAIIAN CROWN WAS OVERTHROWN. THE BELOVED AND RESPECTED PRINCESS SPEARHEADED ATTEMPTS TO RESTORE THE KINGDOM, AND EVEN VISITING PRESIDENT GROVER CLEVELAND IN AN ATTEMPT TO THWART U.S. ANNEXATION. CLEVELAND BROUGHT HER CASE FOR RESTORATION OF THE MONARCHY TO CONGRESS, AND CONGRESS DID POSTPONE ANNEXATION, BUT DENIED RESTORATION. ANNEXATION OF THE REPUBLIC OF HAWAII TOOK PLACE IN 1898. SHE DIED IN 1899, SEVEN MONTHS AFTER HAWAII BECAME A U.S. TERRITORY, AT THE AGE OF 23.
